Reasons for undertaking surgery?
Gynecomastia affects approximately 40 to 60% of men occuring in one or both breasts. The cause of gynecomastia can be due to several factors such as change in hormones, excess weight, sometimes prescriptive drugs. Men can feel self-conscious about their appearance and gynecomastia surgery can help. The procedure removes fat and glandular tissue from the breasts.
Procedure during the operation?
An incision is made outside of the nipple through which the tissue is removed. Should the enlargement is due to glandular tissue, this tissue can be removed. After the removal of the tissue, the incision is closed with plastic stitches and a drain is. The drain is removed the following day.
What to expect after the operation?
Patients can expect to experience some swelling and pain after the surgery. However, these can be alleviated with painkillers. A support bra should be worn for approximately 6 weeks after the surgery to ensure the desired results are achieved. The stitches are removed 14 days after surgery and this can be arranged with your local GP or nurse.
When can you resume normal activities?
Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for the first 2 weeks after surgery.
