Reasons for undertaking surgery?
In most cases breast reduction follows a medical complaint. Oversized or very heavy breasts can lead to severe back problems and difficulty with maintaining posture. In the breast reduction procedure, removing tissue from the lower part of the breast reduces the breast volume.
Procedure during the operation?
In the breast reduction procedure, removing tissue from the lower part of the breast reduces the breast volume. A breast reduction is performed under general anaesthetic. The operation should last approximately 2.5 hours. There will be a circular incision around the areola and a vertical cut from the areola down to the crease of the breast. In certain cases where the breast are very large, an incision in the crease of the breast is also necessary. The incision is then closed with plastic stitches and a drain is placed. The drain is removed the following day.
What to expect after the operation?
Patients can expect to experience some swelling and pain after the surgery. However, these can be alleviated with painkillers. A support bra should be worn for approximately 6 weeks after the surgery to ensure the desired results are achieved. The stitches are removed 14 days after surgery and this can be arranged with your local GP or nurse.
When can you resume normal activities?
Lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for the first 3 weeks after surgery.
What are the complications that may arise from the operation?
